  1. I don’t think those are fakes. Looks like a millimeter radar image with color enhancement.

  4. Christ, i had a long well thought out sarcastic response to this. Here is the TL;DR version.

    TL;DR

Terrorists have bypassed every single protocol and technology we have developed. The only things you truly need not to worry about is Guns or knives. Go on and say “well if just one act is all that will ever occur then it is worth it. It will have saved lives”

Because if it is one things terrorists love to not do is research and figure out how to bypass security measures that rely on publicly available and documented technologies.

    Right?

    • Sadly… I have to agree. We waste so much time and money trying project the illusion of security, when in fact we are only marginally more secure than we were before. About the only thing that has really changed is our attitude, and our perception of security.

And at the same time, we are quickly shredding what little personal freedoms we have left under the purposes of maintaining this illusion. It is absolutely ridiculous…

  5. It’s already used at some UK airports. Only 1 in 100 are scanned though, and if you refuse, they won’t let you fly.

  6. I’d rather some people be offended by this, than some people being blown up by a shoe bomb or a fruit of the loom bomb.

    • I think you forgot the loincloth bomb.

But here’s the thing. If a terrorist knows there are going to to be x-ray scanners at an airport he or she has plans to blow up on some particular day, they simply won’t put the explosives on their person. They’ll find another way. And it becomes exponentially easier for them to do so if they are willing to sacrifice themselves in the process.

You know what would really make us safer? Perhaps learning to stop bullying other countries into doing what we want. We poke our noses into all kinds of places it does not belong, and are somehow surprised that terrorists make us a target. This is what nobody wants to admit, because it also implies that our being a target is partially our own fault.

I’d rather not have my every conversation recorded, my freedom of speech eroded, my freedom to practice whatever harmless beliefs I might have eliminated, and my every action monitored and restricted just to maintain some deceptive illusion of safety.

      • People freaked when this was even hinted at just after 9/11, though it was so clearly true. I’m not even saying that we should not necessarily put our noses in various places, but we should certainly recognize that doing so may have unpleasant consequences. We also need to remember that we are not automatically the good guys.

        • Exactly. We have to own the fact that our very own actions are, more or less, the reason that terrorists target us. They are attacking our way of life, because our way of life has historically been at the expense of others way of life.

The truth is that not only are we not automatically the good guys, but in many cases we have been, out and out, up and down, the bad guys, using brute force to achieve whatever we though would be good for America at the time, everyone else be damned.

Well, we reap what we sow, and for all of the weeping, wailing, crying, gnashing of teeth and shaking of fists at terrorists, compared to what we have inflicted on other countries, we have reaped a heckuvalot less pain and suffering than we have actually sown.

    • You reallize that all it takes is the TERARIST putting it all up his ass to make it invisible, right?

  7. “Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety deserve neither Liberty nor Safety” -Ben Franklin.

It would be just a matter of time before terrorists find ways around this, like they did with metal detectors. Fighting a war against terror is a war one can never win because there is no way to convince all people not to ever attack one another.

    • All this machine does is scan you past your clothes. You wanna know how to bypass it?

      1) Take stick of dynamite.
      2) Enclose it in a lubed-up ziplock bag,
      3) Submit yourself to this silly machine.
      4) Get onboard.
      5) Go to the toilet.
      6) Take out the dynamite.
      7) Blow up one of the airplane’s sides and yourself with it.
      8) ???
      9) 72 virgins.

HOW HAPPY ARE YOU THAT WE WASTED MILLIONS ON TERAHERTZ IMAGING NOW?

  8. Right, wrong or indifferent this technology will be applied in some form.
To avoid problems concerning nudity; If the power levels could be made low enough, it would seem prudent to take it down to the skeletal level, like in the movie “Total Recall”.
